    Listings in West Columbia, TX

A Brazoria County city with deep Texas history — the first capital of the Republic of Texas — set at the crossroads of Highways 35 and 36 southwest of Houston.

West Columbia is a small city in Brazoria County, Texas, situated about 55 miles southwest of downtown Houston and roughly two miles west of the Brazos River. The 2020 census counted roughly 3,600 residents. The city sits at the intersection of Texas Highways 35 and 36, two state routes that connect it to Angleton, the county seat, and to Bay City and the wider Gulf Coast region. West Columbia's defining trait is its place in Texas history. In 1836 it served as the first capital of the Republic of Texas, where the new nation's first congress met to organize a government, postal system, and navy. That legacy is preserved across the city: a replica of the first capitol was built in 1977, and the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site interprets the region's plantation and frontier past. The Columbia Historical Museum documents local history, and sites such as the Rosenwald School and Veterans Memorial Park add further layers to the community's story. The surrounding economy has long mixed agriculture and energy. In the mid-twentieth century, major oil companies maintained producing wells nearby, and the area was said at one point to hold one of the largest cattle herds in Texas. Today the city functions largely as a residential and historic community within the Houston metropolitan orbit, with commuting and regional employment supported by the highway network. Public schools are operated by Columbia-Brazoria ISD, headquartered in the city. Recreation centers on local parks, hunting, fishing, and the Brazos River country nearby. West Columbia suits residents who value Texas history, a small-town pace, and a location that keeps Houston and the Gulf Coast within a manageable drive.

    City Guide

    About West Columbia

    Real Estate & Housing

Housing in West Columbia is typical of a small Texas county-seat community, with older single-family homes on town lots near the historic center and larger acreage and rural parcels on the outskirts. The city's modest scale and Brazoria County location support a mix of established neighborhoods and more spacious properties. Buyers are often drawn by the combination of lower-density living and relative proximity to Houston, Angleton, and the Gulf Coast.

    Neighborhoods

West Columbia's residential areas radiate from a compact historic core near the first capitol site and the Highway 35 and 36 crossroads. Older homes and civic landmarks cluster downtown, while newer homes and acreage lots extend toward the Brazos River and the surrounding countryside. The pattern gives the city a quiet, spread-out feel, with most neighborhoods only minutes from the historic district and the highway corridors.

    Lifestyle in West Columbia

West Columbia has a history-minded, small-town character. Local identity is anchored in the city's role as the first capital of the Republic of Texas, and residents support a museum, historic sites, and community observances tied to that heritage. Daily life moves at a relaxed Gulf Coast pace, centered on schools, churches, and local parks, with larger shopping, dining, and employment options in Angleton, Lake Jackson, and Houston.

    Schools & Education

Public education is provided by Columbia-Brazoria ISD, headquartered in West Columbia. The district serves students from the city and the surrounding Brazoria County area, operating from its offices on 16th Street. Its community scale keeps schools closely tied to local life, with a full K-12 program serving the region's families. The district anchors school activities and athletics across the area, and its central location makes campuses easily reachable for West Columbia residents.
